Florida Parrot Rescue is a 501c3, non-profit, all volunteer run rescue that works out of a network of foster homes located all over the state of Florida. We currently have over 85 fosters, numerous birds in rescue, and many more on the waiting list that still need to come in. We currently do not have a central location which allows us to spend the majority of donations on veterinarian bills (close to $45,000 in 2013) with very little going to administration costs (phone bills, web bills) and necessary community events.
However, with the recent influx of birds and the special neglect and hoarding cases we have had to handle, it is becoming clear that in order to continue to expand and help more parrots in distress, that we need a central location. So, FPR has decided to look for land in order to start a sanctuary side to our rescue. Our vision is and will always remain, to adopt out 95%+ of the birds that come into rescue. We feel that most of the birds that come to us are used to being around people and are bonded with humans and therefore should remain in companion homes. There will always be a few birds that do not want to be with humans nor adjust well in the home environment, and it would be those birds that would remain in sanctuary forever, however, we will strive to make that only 5% or less of the birds we receive. We will also always use foster homes for most birds coming into rescue so that we can properly evaluate how they do in private homes and what type of home environments they should be adopted into. A central location will also serve as an educational facility for current and future parrot owners. We also feel that a completely sanctuary type setting, where all birds coming in would remain in sanctuary permanently, is not sustainable and that adoption into a new home should always be the first and preferred option if the birds temperment allows. Otherwise we would not be able to continue to help more birds if we filled a finite space with birds who would adjust better in a home, leaving those who still need help with no where to go.
We have begun the search where this facility could be located, but we need your help! In addition to the grants we are currently working on in order to purchase land, we need donations to purchase supplies to build aviaries and flight cages. We will also need a donated riding lawn mower, pressure washer, and a golf cart with a small trailer for upkeep of the future location of Florida Parrot Rescue and Sanctuary. We also need strong backs to help us build these structures once we have the supplies. Getting a contractor on board that is willing to help us is also necessary as we plan to add an education center with a library as well as a store front where we will sell avian products to help support the rescue. We will also need two trailers or manufactured homes that can be used as an office and residence for an FPR caretaker and also for an exam area for when our vet comes out to the property to examine the residents (which will be monthly in addition to the vet visits the birds in foster homes will individually make to the vets office as they do now). Remember that all donations, including work time, are a tax write off! This can also be an excellent way for your business to gain advertising (see donation amounts below and the link to our chipin).
Of course once all is said and done, we will need volunteers at the property on a regular basis to care for the birds, upkeep the grounds, work the store front and talk to visitors.
