Florida Parrot Rescue KIDS! Dogs & Cats

Florida Parrot Rescue KIDS! is a new program that came about as an inkling of an idea while our director, Jennifer James, was visiting a local shelter with her son, JR.

While visiting Hillsborough County Animal Services in Tampa, JR said he wanted to start his own “non profit animal rescue”– I know what you’re thinking! He’s as crazy as his mom, right? =) Ever the optimist (also like his mother), JR decided he wanted to use all his own money to start a rescue. When his mom started posing some logical questions that he did not quite have the answers to such as: “Where are all these animals going to live?” JR decided he wanted the help of FPR. His very smart mom then decided to call the more logical part of her brain (That would be the VP Karen Atwood) and see what she thought of the idea, Karen’s response was, “Well, Dawson is going to want to help too!”. Obviously this is a very RAW idea, however here is the plan. We will allow the children of our current fosters to form their own “sub rescue”.   They will have a page (this page!!) on our website, appropriatley titled “Florida Parrot Rescue KIDS!” and we will allow the older high school aged kids to oversee everything they do. They will be updating their own page, and coming up with their own fundraising ideas. We will probably even allow them to create their own Facebook page and Chip In accounts, but we are not there yet. They will NOT be taking animals from the public. They will ONLY be pulling dogs and cats from animal shelters, and to start it will only be from Hillsborough. Think of this as a “pilot” project.
This project needs funding, and a lot of thought. They will be accepting fosters as well. In addition, I am sure once the core group gets formed they will be allowing other children to assist. Of course, the adult coordinators and directors will be closely involved as well. We feel that in addition to saving lives, we will be educating the children on responsible pet ownership and the dedication it takes to be a part of a rescue. If you’re interested in helping please let us know by e-mailing us at flparrotrescue@aol.com
Please understand that this program will pull dogs and cats from Hillsborough County Animal Services ONLY and the number pulled will depend on available funds for this program.

They say that only cats have nine lives. After you listen to my story you might think that I’m part cat, although I’m all dog. My name is Max and I’m a two year old Lab mix, although I’m more Lab than the mix. I was found wandering the streets of Tampa. When I was found, I was hungry, scared and had been attacked by a vicious dog, because I had bite marks all over my head, paws and body. I was not a pretty sight on the outside, although I’m all cuddly on the inside! The good people at the dog pound gave me a place to sleep and some food, but because I was in a pretty bad shape, chances of my adoption were pretty slim, and you know what happens to those dogs that do not get adopted :( With only 6 hours to go before I would be put to sleep, a kind foster family came and took me. However, what would have been a happy ending kept getting worse. My surgical wound opened up after a couple of days and I started bleeding profusely. Fortunately, my foster family got me to a very good vet, very quickly. The doctor was able to make everything OK, although I had to wear a very uncomfortable collar for a while. Another present I got from the pound was a case of viral pneumonia. Between the surgery and pneumonia, I was in a really sad shape and my foster family and the vet were not quite sure if I would pull through. All I could do is wag my tail as a sign of appreciation, but not much else. To top this off, when the vet office took an X-ray of my body they also discovered that I had 15 pieces of buckshot in my back and head! Fortunately it was not causing me any discomfort, so the buckshot is now permanently part of me. Over the course of time, I have been able to regain my strength and now my foster family sees me for what I really am, a rambunctious, loving, playful, slightly cross-eyed, healthy, obedient dog. I am house trained, very quiet and walk pretty well on a leash. I get along with other dogs, as long as they are not too small. I tend to confuse them with cats. Oops :) I am fine around kids, and will try to join you on the couch to get my belly rubbed. As you can see, I’ve had enough excitement in my short life. I’m now trying to settle down with a “furever” family. I can promise you years of unconditional love and friendship and would like my new family to reciprocate. So, how about it?

Hi all, my name is Emmitt and I am a 7 year old Shih Tzu.  I am super friendly, easy-going, playful and I love to cuddle.  My story was a sad one, as I was a lost dog who wound up in the dog pound and came within one day of going to doggie heaven.  Fortunately, my foster family bailed me out just in time.  After lots of baths and brushings, I look like my old handsome self again. The doctor gave me all kinds of tests and proclaimed that, with the exception of one blind eye, I am very healthy and ready to look for my new permanent family.  I am fine around other dogs and birds.  Little kids don’t scare me either.  I love going for short walks and I behave myself when on a leash.  I am a quiet boy but will let you know when I need food or need to go potty.  Well, enough about me, tell me about yourself?
