This is Max, a severe macaw, which is also one of the mini macaw species. Don’t let his size fool you though. There is a big personality in there as well as plenty of brain power!

We don’t know much of anything about his history. No known age and sex is unknown. We also have no idea how many homes he’s been through, but we do know there have been at least two previously.

Here’s what we do know. He was put up for sale in a classified ad and even in the pictures it was apparent he was not just plucked, but also had a large untreated wound on his chest. The wound is due to self mutilation. He also has atrophied wings likely from living in a cage so small he couldn’t open his wings. Max’s journey to Florida Parrot Rescue started with a good Samaritan who saw him in the ad and knew he need immediate veterinary treatment. She paid his ransom and relinquished him to the rescue. Dr. Readdy, the head FPR vet, took him in at Country Chase Veterinary to get his path to healing started before he transferred to an FPR foster home.

Now one would expect Max to have every reason to hate humans, however, he does not. As a matter of fact, he has proven to be a very sweet bird! While, his poor health may make him a bit more docile, it’s safe to say this is a guy who knows he has been saved and is very grateful. He loves head scratches, snuggles and beaky kisses. In many ways its easy to look at Max and be discouraged with humanity. However, I choose to view this as a testament to the good that can be done when kind hearted and passionate people work together. Saving Max has been a true team effort. First, his ransom was paid by a generous caring soul, then he was given top notch care at Country Chase Veterinary by Dr. Readdy and finally, several contributed prayers, positive thoughts and well wishes along with generous donations were added. Those donations came not only into FPR, but also into a benevolent organization named the Parrot Posse. Its members contributions have paid for his vet care, a cage and many other wonderful things he needs.

Be sure to follow Max’s story as it unfolds. I suspect you will soon see what his foster parents see, a sweet bird with an amazing determination to heal and eager to live a long full life.

UPDATE:

When Max came in I think we were all surprised at how dire his situation was. Besides the obvious large wound, he was weak and had been on a diet of “monkey mix” which we can likely assume was not appropriate for a macaw. His care began with Dr. Readdy treating the wound and medicating for infection in addition to offering pain relief. At that time he was not eating well and only picked at treat foods. Since then a lot of wonderful things have happened along with many positive steps forward. He is now eating very well and not finicky at all. He is eating fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and pellets. His wound has been dressed by Dr. April Romagnano with a duoderm patch sewn to his chest. He has not picked at it and has thus been able to avoid being collared. He is active, playing with toys, chattering and doing typical macaw vocalizing. Last night he was moved into a beautiful, spacious new cage decked out complete with perches and toys all donated by the Parrot Posse. Finally, his description in his classified ad implied he was not friendly which is totally false. Max is a treasure who loves head scratches and cuddles and showing immense gratitude for having been saved. Thanks everyone for your donations, well wishes and prayers. You have all made a huge difference in this bird’s life!

“RAEGAN”
Severe Macaw
Adoption Fee $350 or $550 with cage

Reagan is a 7 yr old female Severe Macaw, soon to celebrate her hatch date on 8/19. She has always lived in the same home, so initially she is frightened of new surroundings. All of this has been a little confusing for Reagan but a soft voice and a confident arm will win her over quickly. She is in beautiful feather and we are currently working on incorporating more fresh food into her diet of pellets, fruit & nuts. Reagan is inquisitive and affectionate, a dream companion for someone who appreciates the personality of the mini macaw.

Skeeter Severe Macaw available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“SKEETER”
SEVERE MACAW
Adoption Fee $350 or $550 with cage

Skeeter is a beautiful Severe Macaw (also known as Chestnut Fronted Macaws), the largest of what is known as the “Mini-Macaws”.  Severe Macaws can live to 30 years, so this little guy will be around for many years to come.  It is thought that he is probably around 10 years old.  Severe Macaws tend to be comical and relatively friendly, with a large personality.  Severe Macaws are very intelligent and bond quickly with their owner.  They would love to hang out with their “flock” (owners) at least an hour per day but should at least be let out of their cage for 2-4 hours daily to stretch their muscles and exercise their beaks and wings.  These birds are generally not known as great talkers but what they lack in talking ability.  Of course, once adopted, he’ll need a sturdy cage, plenty of variety in his diet, including fruit, veggies, pasta, grains, well cooked eggs, white meats and pellets.  I would love to introduce you to Skeeter so please complete the application and I’ll be happy to introduce you to this beautiful bird named Skeeter!

Stevie Red Lored Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“STEVIE”
Red Lored Amazon
Adoption Fee $350 or $550 with cage

This Red-Lored Amazon, Stevie, is an extremely sweet and gentle bird, not to mention his beauty!  He may be around 9 or 10 years old.  He is a loud bird when he calls to his flock (you).  He loves interaction with humans and seems to adapt well to men or women.  He doesn’t perch on a hand very well,  but we are working on it.  He is intelligent and speaks a few phrases, such as “Hello”, “Hi”, “Whatcha doing, huh?”, “Pretty, pretty bird”, “What are you doing here?”.  He loves to wolf whistle and will also whistle the opening bars of “Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells”. He is a great eater and is eating pellets, vegetables and fruits.  This beautiful bird will not last long so please complete that application if you are interested in meeting Stevie!

“PRETTY BIRD”
Double Yellow Head Amazon
Adoption Fee $350 or $550 with cage

HELLO!! Hello!! My name is “Pretty Bird”  I’m a 30  (I think) year old double yellow headed amazon, I am just getting used to this new place here and I am starting to see that these “people” are kind of nice to have around– I am very shy about stepping up as I haven’t been handled a whole lot!  But I have decided all these hands have been gentle, so I play nice too. I have been through a lot;  my right foot had been broken or fractured in the past and never treated -so sometimes I lose my balance, I have also plucked out all of my back feathers ( it’s cooler that way)– and I also had to have something removed from my beak, but it’s getting better! I also have a heart murumr, so would like to live in a quiet home please! I love to mimic the phone to get you to come running (hehe–still have my sense of humor) and I say “hello” , Pretty Bird”, and I laugh, and of course I LOVE to EAT— anything you give me, and if your cooking or eating something I want I will make an alarm sound until you share! All I want is someone that will love and cherish me forever!

Sonny Yellow Nape Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot RescueSonny Yellow Nape Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

Sonny Yellow Nape Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

Sonny came into rescue with a damaged air sac as you can see in this picture. He had surgery in an attempt to fix this issue, however the injury had been with him for too long. Because of this, the air sac will need to be drained on a regular basis.

“SONNY”
YELLOW NAPE AMAZON
Adoption Fee $350 or $550 with cage

Hi my name is Sonny and I’m a 27yr old Yellow Naped Amazon. I had a damaged air sac for a really long time (more than 8 years!) and I recently had surgery  to repair the damage, but it looks as though the damage had been there too long, so I now will have this for the rest of my life, but I don’t mind, if you don’t mind taking me to the vet a little more regularly than most birds need to go! My foster mom says I have a very big heart. I  have this crazy affinity for BELLS (I like to ring them) my newest one is a stainless steel one that I had ordered from the Florida Parrot Rescue store, it makes the prettiest noise yet!!!( you can see it on my you tube videos #1 and #2 ). I am very vocal, I love to hang out with you outside of my cage as much as possible, I am proficient at eating, AND talking (see I am talented AND beautiful) I always wanna know whatcha doin? So if you can look over my slight imperfection, and would like a good companion, I think we could live happily ever after!

Peter Red Lored Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“PETER”
Red Lored Amazon
Adoption Fee $350 or $550 with cage

This little guy is quite the character! He loves to play and explore and is curious about everything. However, he is very skittish of people. He is going to need some time to learn to trust. He loves to come over and talk to you as long as you don’t make any movements towards him. If you move, he runs. He is a bit of a picky eater, but we are working on introducing different foods to him. He makes all kinds of interesting noises and is interested in everything that is happening around him. He is looking for an experienced amazon home that has lots of patience, and bundles of love.

“HAL”
Eclectus
Adoption Fee $350 or $550 with cage

Hal is a male eclectus who has a hatch date of 2004. He lets us hold him and pet him a little bit and we speak really nice and soft to him, but he mostly prefers the comfort of his cage. I’m sure that with time he will become more comfortable with his new surroundings and with us and be more social. We sprout fresh seeds every day which he loves, and he has several fruits and vegetables to choose from in addition to a mix of 3 pellets. He is eating well, but due to his previous junk food diet, he isn’t that excited about vegetables yet! He seems to enjoy baths, although it is obvious he had not previously had them on a regular basis. He has been making lots of Eclectus cooing noises and other jungle sounding noises, but he hasn’t been talking, although he has recently begun saying “Hello”. He does seem happy, and he plays a lot, he spins around in his cage and chews on his toys. He has a follow up visit with the vet soon as he is currently being treated for a bacterial and fungal infection, which we should be able to clear up easily. Hopefully once his diet is normalized, he may let some of his feathers grow in!

update:  Hal has more feathers growing in every day, and his color is looking better. He is enjoying more vegetables now, and his favorites are corn, broccoli, red peppers and cauliflower.  Hal recently attended our annual fundraiser, Fashion, Feathers and Fur and he did great!  He went to EVERYONE and was so sweet and social!!

Charlie Sulfur Crested Cockatoo available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“CHARLIE”
Sulfur Crested Cockatoo
Adoption Fee $400 or $650 with cage

Charlie is a sulfur crested cockatoo. He has always been called a “he” but his sex is unknown as is his species. He is either a small medium sulfur crested or a hybrid of a lesser sulfur and a medium. Life hasn’t always been easy for Charlie. In the first home we are aware of he was attacked by a pair of macaws. They destroyed his upper mandible. It has partially grown back, but his sinuses are still exposed and always will be. It hasn’t inhibited him though from being active or from eating. He may not be able to crack a walnut, but he readily eats most anything else without assistance. His beak does however require trimming every four weeks in order to keep from growing too long. If this isn’t done it makes eating difficult and will cause it to become thin and brittle as well. Charlie’s next home was with a well meaning person who took in more birds than she could handle. Compounded by the owner’s poor health he was soon living in unhealthy conditions. The home was crowded and the air toxic.

Now Charlie is living in foster care and having a blast. He loves to play with toys that he can stash in his boxes, and will actually unscrew toys hung from the top of the cage to add to his stash. He loves his foster mom. His foster dad? Well, not so much. Other birds? Again, not so much. Actually poor Charlie is rather anti social and seems to strongly bond to one person and one person only. He’s extremely smart and is an escape artist. Charlie may not be perfect in appearance or behavior, but if you are looking for a challenge and are female he is worth the effort. To the one he chooses he is very loving and sweet.

Roxanne Umberella Cockatoo available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“ROXANNE”
Umbrella Cockatoo

Adoption Fee $400 Or $650 With Cage

Roxanne is a 19 year old female Umbrella Cockatoo. She was raised and lived with the same person until a family crisis forced her owner to give her up. She has begun plucking her chest in addition to being in the beginning stages of self mutilation. While she is a very gentle and loving bird with the person she chooses, she has a lack of trust of others and can be possessive of her chosen person. This lack of trust manifests itself into fear and the possessiveness has resulted in biting behavior. Fortunately, her self mutilation behavior is already starting to subside and soon her behavioral rehabilitation can begin in earnest. She will need a lot of attention and care to keep her healthy for a very long time to come as this species can live up to 75 to 80 years! She will need an experienced owner with lots of avian knowledge!

Ticklebird Yellow Naped Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“TICKLE BIRD”
Yellow-Naped Amazon

Adoption Fee $350 or $550 With Cage

Tickle bird is a jumbo Yellow-Naped Amazon. She is about 15 years old. She came from a family that raised her from a baby. She seems to have a dual personality and does not like women. Whenever she is upset or wants attention, she starts screaming out the names ALAN, or ROBERT, or JAMES and also HELP and OUCH. These behaviors are easily dealt with by speaking to her quietly or distracting her with music or games such as step up or what I call punch ball (a ping pong ball that I suspend for her to punch at.) She can sometimes be a bit hand shy and will give a good little bite when approached too quickly. Foster mom has been attempting to change the aggressive behavior with soothing words, giving favorite treats and being the one to change out food and water. This seems to be working as she is a bit less aggressive towards her. But will still try to chase after her and bite her feet when out. She is a very fast runner! The other side of her is a soft speaking, playful and curious little girl. Her vocalizations are mostly mono syllable like GOOD, WATER,
FOOD, DOG, WHATEVER, OK and ALRIGHT. She also seems to have endless phone conversations, sometimes lasting up to 15 minutes. And when the phone rings will say HELLO. One of her favorite games to pull her cage cover sheet inside of her cage and wrap herself up in it like a cocoon then jump out and squawk. She loves to imitate Stevie Wonder while dancing to music and will sometimes comment on what is going on the TV by saying OOAHH or OOOOO or ALRIGHT. She does not seem to be bothered at all by the presence of our dog or cat and does not seem interested in other birds. She does come with a large (2’x3’x4’) cage that cannot be broken down.

Stella Bare Eye Cockatoo for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“STELLA”
Bare Eye Cockatoo

Adoption Fee $350
Or $550 With Cage

Meet Stella! At the moment, Stella doesn’t care to be held and is quite independent until she wants something. She loves crackers and seems to really like fresh fruits as well. She whistles with you and loves to dance. If the radio or TV are on and there’s a beat she will start bobbing her head. She recently has picked up a new dance that involves jumping and spinning. It’s very cute. She doesn’t mind being touched and loves the back of her neck rubbed, but if she doesn’t know you she will try and snap at you and then laugh. She is not aggressive, but will let you know if she does not want to be messed with. She loves being out of her cage and outside on the porch. Her wings are clipped but she can still fly pretty well. She gets along with dogs and cats and is not afraid to try and land on them to play. She doesn’t seem to care for toys and would rather play the game of throw everything off the table/cage and watch you pick them up and put them back just so she can throw them again. She’s pretty quiet until dinner time which to her is around 8:30 or 9:00 and then she lets you know shes hungry. She gets a diet of pellets and mixed veggies and fruits daily. She doesn’t like green beans, peas or lima beans. She loves her corn and carrots. I think she will make a great family addition for just about anyone. A family with older kids might be better for her though.

Toothless Mealy Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“TOOTHLESS”
Mealy Amazon

Adoption Fee $350 or $550 With Cage

Meet “Toothless” a Mealy Amazon that we are fostering for Florida Parrot Rescue. Toothless is 25 years old. and is very quiet for an Amazon. He likes to step up, but does not really like to be pet, I am sure that with time though, he will come out of his shell a little more. As you can see he has been picking some of his feathers, but we will be working to get that corrected through diet, socialization and attention. Toothless likes both dogs and cats. He would love to become a part of your family!

Snowy Umbrella Cockatoo available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“SNOWY”
Umbrella Cockatoo

Adoption Fee $400 Or $650 With Cage

Snowy is 36 years old and came into the rescue from a loving home of 25 years. His owners felt they could no longer provide the attention he needs and made the very difficult decision to have him re-homed. Snowy is a very sweet and loving Cockatoo, he loves to snuggle and give kisses. He is a little hesitant at first but with a little nudging will step up for just about anyone, once you pick him up he is a Cuddle Bug! He does get a little jealous of others when his chosen person is around though (he may bite if someone gets too close to him and his chosen person). Snowy makes the sweetest coos and occasionally will laugh with the family, he is very vocal and will carry on his own funny little conversations…. in his very own language! Like most U2′s, he will scream if he feels that he is not getting enough attention. Snowy does pluck his abdominal/chest area but his feathers do still grow back as the follicles are not destroyed. We have not seen him pluck since he came into the foster home, so hopefully they will grow back.  He enjoys being outside sitting on the ‘front porch swing’. Snowy loves his greens and currently eats Roudybush pellets with fresh fruits and vegetables with some nuts. Please remember that this species of bird can live to be 80 years or older and needs a lot of attention on a daily basis. Snowy will make a great addition to your family and still has many years left to devote to you!!!

Jacob Umberella Cockatoo for adoption Florida Parrot RescueJacob Umbrella Cockatoo available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“JACOB”
Umbrella Cockatoo

Adoption Fee $400 Or $650 With Cage

Jacob is a Special Needs Bird, and will only be adopted out under very special circumstances.

Jacob is a sweet and friendly Umbrella Cockatoo. He loves attention and will dance and sing with you or for you! He can also say his name in a variety of voices and loves music and playing with his wooden toys. He does not like men however and will bite them. Jacob is fully feathered and has a great appetite; he is being converted from a seed diet to a diet consisting of a variety of pellets, fresh fruits, veggies and nuts. Jacob has had surgery three times, and is a very special needs bird. He will not be adopted out to just anyone as a result. He does require daily cleaning of his cloaca due to the prolapsed surgeries he has undergone, which he tolerates fairly well. Jacob is a mild screamer and will need more work with that behavior. He will require an extremely experienced Cockatoo handler.

Ollie Red Lored Amazon for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“OLIVER aka OLLIE”
Red Lored Amazon

Adoption Fee $350 Or $550 With Cage

My name is Oliver, Ollie is my nick name. I’m around 33 years young, been an Red Lored Amazon as long as I can remember even though the vet says maybe I have a little bit of Lilac mixed in there somewhere. I was a beach bird and spent most of my time outside even though I have no problem living indoors. I purr like a cat when the vacuum is running and bark like a dog just because I can! I was eating mostly seeds but I’m getting a little more variety here at my new place, pellets with some veggies to compliment my seeds. I’m definitely “eye candy” and I think I like my foster dad better than I like my new mom. I tend to have some cage aggression especially towards her. I very much enjoy sitting on dad’s shoulder while he’s on Facebook or while he’s walking around the house. I also enjoy sitting high atop my perch observing everything while looking sooooo good! I’ll probably need an experienced bird person to be my forever guardian so if you want a beautiful bird with a little bit of attitude I’m the one!

Ringo Yellow Naped Amazon available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

RINGO” Yellow-Naped Amazon
Adoption Fee $350 Or $550 With Cage

Meet Ringo, a Yellow-Naped Amazon, What can we say about Ringo? Well, he’s a typical Amazon! Amazons have very strong personalities. He is cage aggressive and doesn’t like to be handled at this point in his foster care. Progress can be slow but this bird is extremely intelligent and can be a social and happy guy with the right amount of socialization, diet, fun in the sun, human interaction and of course, affection. Ringo gets along with other birds. His foster mom says that he will step up to a perch and then your arm. But that’s a step forward for him. He says “Hello” in many different voice and he has the potential to learn a lot. He/she hasn’t been DNA tested for sex yet, so we don’t know the gender. Amazons’ diets are a little different than most parrots, they need more “natural” foods such as root vegetables like carrots, beets and sweet potatoes. Ringo can be the “ diamond in the rough” for an experienced Amazon handler, not to mention he is one handsome boy with an excellent feather presentation!

Angel African grey available for adoption Florida Parrot Rescue

“ANGEL”
African Grey
Adoption Fee $350 Or $550 With Cage

 This bird has been adopted

Available for adoption: Meet Angel! When Angel first came into the rescue his body was completely bare, having only a few flight feathers on his wings. He obviously had been plucking/chewing on them for quite sometime. He is currently on a mixture of pellets, dried fruits and nuts and fresh fruits and veggies. He enjoys the company of men more then women. He is one of the most entertaining grays I have ever met! He is very quick to pick up on everything he hears! When my husband enters the room Angel will begin pacing on his perch and talking to him to get his attention; he enjoys coming out of his cage and sitting with him. He will sit on his arm and let him scratch and cuddle with him for as long as he’ll let him. He will make someone a wonderfully entertaining companion!
