Application To Adopt A Bird

To qualify to adopt from or foster for Florida Parrot Rescue, any dogs and cats you own must be up to date on vaccinations and dogs must be on heartworm preventative. Any birds owned must have seen a vet within the past year with certain testing in place, not just wing and nail trims (at minimum a physical and a fecal gram stain). We do call your vet to verify these requirements. Once your vet reference passes, we then also send a member of FPR to your home for a home interview. Please understand that we do not adopt out large cockatoos and macaws to people who do not have previous medium to large bird experience. We do assess applications on a one on one basis and look at not only your home life and work life, but also your experience when we decide what type of bird you are qualified to adopt.  Adoption fees can be paid either by PayPal, or with a money order or cashiers check made out to Florida Parrot Rescue or in cash. If you wish to pay by personal check, you may do so but can not take possession of the bird until the check has cleared the bank (this can take 1 -2 weeks). Once you are approved to adopt, we do require an adoption contract be signed in person before you can take possession of your new family member. We do require that you be able to pick up the bird you want to adopt. If you would like to visit with the bird first, we can allow that once we have an approved application on file from you (that is for the protection of our fosters, their families and the animals they care for). We do occasionally allow out of state adoptions. This requires an excellent avian vet reference, a thorough phone interview with an FPR Officer and a face to face interview with an FPR member when you go to the foster home to meet the bird you are interested in. We do not ship birds out of state, you must be able to drive to the foster home of the bird you are adopting. We do require that all birds be adopted either with their existing cage or that the adopter purchase a cage with the size and condition approved by FPR.
